A Day of Neighborhood Beautification

A Day of Neighborhood Beautification

Neighborhood organizations unified on Saturday, September 21st when Jefferson East, Inc and Rebuilding Together Southeast Michigan teamed up to work in Detroit’s Jefferson Chalmers neighborhood. The purpose of this workday was to work on the Michigan State Housing Development Authority’s (MSHDA) Neighborhood Enhancement Program by doing projects that help beautify the neighborhood.

Over 40 wonderful volunteers came out to Jefferson-Chalmers to lend a hand in beautifying 3 vacant lots. In 2 of the lots, an alley was cleared and a rain garden was planted.  The 3rd lot is where Rebuilding Together’s team was stationed for the day. There, we cleared away much of the overgrown vegetation and cleaned up lots of trash. This was done with the help of around 30 volunteers of all ages who worked hard to cut down trees, clear away overgrown brush, pick up trash, and unearth a long-forgotten sidewalk. These improvements will help improve visibility around corners, walkability, and aesthetics throughout the neighborhood.

Overall, it was a very successful and fun day of volunteering. Thank you to everybody who donated their time! We’re looking forward to continuing our partnership with Jefferson East, Inc in the future.
